How it works

What’s in the ground around Sherman.

Blackland clay soaks up water slowly, and Grayson County requires aerobic treatment on lots under 2.5 acres. So most of the systems we pump, maintain and repair are aerobic units with spray heads.

  1. Pretreatment tank Wastewater from the house settles; solids and liquids separate.
  2. Aeration chamber An aerator pumps air in, so bacteria break the sewage down.
  3. Clarifier Remaining solids settle and return to aeration; clear effluent rises.
  4. Chlorinator Effluent passes calcium hypochlorite tablets for disinfection.
  5. Pump tank Treated, disinfected water is stored until the timer runs the pump.
  6. Spray heads or drip Water is dispersed on the lawn, usually at night.

Straight answers

Septic questions, answered.

What is an aerobic septic system?

An aerobic treatment unit is a septic system that pumps air into the wastewater so oxygen-loving bacteria break it down more completely, then disinfects the clear effluent and disposes of it, usually through spray heads or drip lines.

What should I do when my septic alarm goes off?

Silence the alarm, cut water use right away (no laundry, dishwasher or long showers), check that the system’s breaker hasn’t tripped, and call your maintenance provider. Most panels have a silence button; the light stays on until the problem is fixed.

How often should a septic tank be pumped in Texas?

For a conventional septic tank, TCEQ and most installers recommend pumping every three to five years. Aerobic systems are pumped based on the depth of sludge and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Why do so many homes around Sherman have aerobic systems?

Because of the soil and the rules. Most of Grayson County sits on Blackland Prairie clay, which absorbs water slowly, and Grayson County requires aerobic treatment on any lot under 2.5 acres.

Who issues septic permits in Grayson County, Texas?

Grayson County Development Services, through its OSSF Division at 100 W. Houston St. in Sherman, permits septic systems in the county’s jurisdiction as TCEQ’s authorized agent.
